Old Washington County Courthouse building

Construction on this building started in 1866 and was finished in 1876; at the time, St. George was known as Dixie. The 2 foot thick walls in the basement served as a jail, with two cells. They had dirt floors with no windows. The hinges can still be seen.

In the copula on top is the old gallows for Washington County. Although they were built, they were never used.

The building is now used as a historical landmark. The main floor and the courthouse can be viewed. The jail cells and copula are closed to the public.
